MAINTENANCE WORK - FALL

It's the season when "we count the buds", when the effort put in during all the other seasons are reflected in the quantity and quality of the fruits that we will start picking in the month of august, in a bigger quantity. We need to repeat the picking process every 3-4 days, because th fruits are ripening in stages.

In case of fresh delivery of the fruits in casserolles, the picking is done by hand, the fruits are harvested at a stage where they didnt fully ripen, after which they are mandatorily introduced into the refrigeration chamber, because goji is a perishable fruit, which degrades and enters into fermentation, due to the sugar that it contains.

In case the crop is destined for juice and jam production, then it is recommended to pick at a completely ripe stage, so that the fruits are as juicy and ripe as possible, which is achieved by shaking the plant and allowing the berries to fall on a piece of plastic or tarp layed around the plant, helping with an easy gathering of them, eliminating to touch it with the hands.

After transporting the berries in crates or boxes, they are thoroughly washed repeatedly (the leaves fallen during shaking are collected, after drying them tea is made) we introduce them into a grinder and a press. From these same berries we can make goji brandy or even champaigne if different recepes are followed, for personal use or commercializing.

If the bees, besides pollinating our plants, blessed us with a good harvest of honey (willow, poliflora), we have the possibility to preserve goji berries in their fresh state, it being one of the oldest and healthyest preserving methods of mankind. This goji macerate with honey should be consumed in the morning, on an empty stomach.

This season is the most labour intensive one, it requires a higher number of helping hands with the harvest and processing stages (which diminishes the high costs in this period), but at the same time it's the season that brings the most joy and satisfaction to the grower, to be able to literally see the fruits of their labour.

After we are finished with the harvest and processing, we can do a calculation of the income and expenses, check the value of the product that we have in stock and see if it was a profitable year, analize the mistakes made during the production process.

If the number crunching is satisfactory and we have plans of expanding our plantation, now it's the time to plant the trees that we carefully picked out from our own nursery or the ones bought, into the new spot, before the first frost hits.
