pro and contra non proven properties of goji

I love to grow, harvest and consume goji berries
Like me, there are many reasons why people grow and consume goji berries.

The growers – are happy with a new fast growing expensive crop on demand with many agricultural advantages and selling it at a high price.

On the other side - the consumers believe that the goji berries are vital for their health and possess researched proven medicinal properties –as advertised.
Scientifically – the situation is not so clear. No clinical research was conducted as to answer so many questions and support the benefits of consuming the goji berries in various forms.

Let us start and analyze the goji berries with the scientific apparatus for its content. Goji berries contain among others: vitamin C, vitamin B2, vitamin A, iron, selenium and other antioxidants in the form of polysaccharides.
In addition, there exist ancient etno-medicinal non proven claims by consuming Goji to overcome many health issues.

Claim 1: Goji helps for immunity, cardiovascular disease and life expectancy

There is no reliable evidence to support these health benefits. Most of the research into these conditions are small-sized, of poor quality, and performed in laboratories using purified and highly concentrated extracts of the goji berry.

Claim 2: Goji helps the wellbeing, brain activity and digestion

There exist one that showed that a daily drink of 120ml of goji berry juice for 14 days improved feelings of wellbeing, brain activity and digestion. However, the study involved only 34 people and was attempting to measure the effects of goji berry juice on a variety of conditions. The results of the study were inconclusive.

Claim 3: Goji helps cure Cancer

In a 1994 Chinese report tells that an research was conducted on 79 patients with various advanced cancers. It was found that those treated with immunotherapy in combination with goji polysaccharides saw their cancers regress. However, information on the design of the study and the goji berry compounds used are lacking, so it is difficult to fully assess the significance of the results.

Claim 4: Goji helps our daily diet

The scientific evidence for that is weak. Many goji berry products are sold as health foods, but the evidence of their health benefits so far comes from scientific studies using purified extracts of the fruit at much higher concentrations than the products contain.

Conclusion: There is a need for scientific research on Goji as to show its benefits and in combination with other compounds and drugs.

I love goji but will sell it AS IS without long tales and unproven facts.
